Meet Ja’Vontaye Gagum

Ja’Vontaye Gagum is a senior attending North Carolina Central University, located in Durham, NC. He is an English Major with a concentration in Language and Literature. He aspires to be a high school English educator and world-renowned writer. Ja’Vontaye currently serves as the Southern Regional Associate Student Representative for Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society. Known for his quick wit (both Google Dictionary definitions) and good humor, he intertwines those traits into his writings in hopes to encourage the next generation to do the same.

  1. I chose to become an English Major because the power of imagination can run wild and one’s mind can open up to a world filled with insight and epiphany; all thanks to words woven into a theme jotted down on paper from a brilliant mind.
  2. My favorite part of being an English Major is analyzing different works and comparing them to real world situations.
  3. The last book I read was Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall.
  4. My favorite book is Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis.
  5. A book character I identify with is Sherlock Holmes in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
  6. The last book I bought was Husband Material by Alexis Hall, and I have not read it yet.
  7. My favorite book to movie adaptation is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.
  8. I’m more of a writer.
  9. My favorite styles of writing are narrative and expository.
  10. My go-to children’s book is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is being around family for the holidays.
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be president of the United States.
  13. My first job was as a tech specialist at Office Depot.
  14. My dream job is to become an Emmy-winning writer.
  15. I like to spend my free time socializing and writing.

  18. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in London, England.
  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are a car door, in case I get hot and wanted to roll the window down; my partner to prevent boredom; and a boat, in case I got bored and wanted to leave.
  20. The one song I could listen to on repeat is Champion” by Kanye West.
  21. The best gift I ever received was the first birthday cake I ever received from my partner on my twenty-first birthday.
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is being a modest and faithful philanthropist on a daily basis.
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up honey glazed salmon (though my favorite food is pancakes).
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, it would be Eggs Woodhouse from How to Archer: the Ultimate Guide to Espionage and Style and Women and Also Cocktails Ever Written by Sterling Archer.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Walt Whitman.
