Meet DeAndra Miller

DeAndra Miller is the Sigma Tau Delta Alumni Representative and graduated from Florida International University with her MFA in Creative Writing. She is currently a full-time Instructor of English at Florida Atlantic University where she enjoys teaching creative writing, literature, and graphic novels courses. DeAndra is also an author in the process of selling her first book, Hail Mary. She loves giant breed dogs, video games, her bearded dragon–Puff, and all manner of brewed teas. She, most excitedly, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for her creative non-fiction piece, “Bible Study.”

  1. I chose to become an English Major because I read too many books anyway, so I figured I may as well make it a thing (haha!).
  2. My favorite part of being an English Major is understanding the works I love on a deeper level and seeing something new every time.
  3. The last book I read was LaGuardia by Nnedi Okorafor (I am teaching it for a Graphic Novels course this semester!).
  4. My favorite series is The Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn.
  5. A book character I identify with is Simi from Wahala by Nikki May because I understand imposter syndrome on such a deep level.
  6. The last book I bought was The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson and Jackal by Erin E. Adams. I have not read them yet.
  7. My favorite book to series adaptation is The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
  8. I’m more of a writer than a reader.
  9. My favorite style of writing is creative narrative actually, especially lyric essay!
  10. My go-to children’s book is Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is staying up late to read 800 page books in one sitting.
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be a surgeon.
  13. My first job was as a Game Advisor at GameStop.
The Oscar Wilde Monument in Dublin, Ireland
  14. My dream job is a creative writing professor.
  15. I like to spend my free time writing and playing video games.
  16. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Japan! Especially Akihibara and Shibuya.
  17. The literary place I’d most like to visit is Oscar Wilde’s statue!
  18. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in Finland or Norway (It looks like Christmas there!).
  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are water, food, and books.
  20. The one song I could listen to on repeat is Autumn Finds Winter” by Yiruma.
  21. The best gift I ever received was a necklace for my birthday.
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is a Nintendo Switch for my husband.
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up something Jamaican.
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, it would be Ichiraku Ramen from Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Tracy Deonn or Tiffany D. Jackson.
