If you’re a Sigma Tau Deltan looking for a summer internship that’s interesting and looks awesome on your resume, apply for the Sigma Tau Delta Journal Internship!
Having just completed my summer as an intern, I can promise you that the experience is worthwhile and all of the work is varied and interesting.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the experience:
First, you have to apply. The application process can seem intimidating, but I promise that it’s not! Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the most recent Journals’ publication, and take some time to think over your answers to the essay questions before submitting them:
- What is your favorite entry in the most recent issue of the Sigma Tau Delta journals, and why is it your favorite?
- What do you hope to achieve from the Journal Internship experience?
- What have you learned from a previous leadership role or work experience that will add value to your time as a Journal intern?
The most important part of the application process is to remember: don’t give up. I applied twice before I got the internship, and both application processes were immensely valuable to me. Speaking to the Managing Editor of Publications, Dr. Carie King, in 2023 was wonderful interview practice, and a great way to get to know more about Sigma Tau Delta. She became a friendly face at my first Sigma Tau Delta convention later that year. Interviewing in 2024 allowed me to show how much I’d grown since the previous year, and continue to practice my interviewing skills.
During the actual internship, your experience can be broken into three main phases: reading time, down time, and editing time.
The first part of the summer is the reading section. Reading submissions has always been my favorite part of editing, and reading for the Sigma Tau Delta journals was no exception. It was such an honor to get to read the work of people from across the Sigma Tau Delta community and to see everyone’s creativity. There were beautiful poems, moving short stories, and insightful critical essays that made me think.
After the reading period, the submissions are sent out to faculty reviewers, and the interns get some time off. This internship is really what you make of it, so I’d encourage you to use this time to build a community. Keep in touch with your fellow interns! I put together a group chat for the 2024 group, and we had fun chatting about books and swapping reading recommendations. It also came in handy for clarifying due dates and asking questions about MLA style.
Once the pieces come back from the reviewers, it’s time for the interns to edit. The best editing advice I ever received was to figure out what the author is trying to do, and help them accomplish it. I love that advice, and I try to keep it in mind every time I’m editing, since my preferred style of fiction isn’t everyone’s. With this in mind, I tried to approach each story, poem, and essay as a blank slate, ready to learn the author’s style and intention and help it grow.
This internship has been a valuable contribution to my professional growth, both in terms of the work done and in terms of the community formed. Hearing about the lives and achievements of my fellow interns inspired me to pursue my own literary goals, and as I enter graduate school to study English, I plan to take their advice and inspiration with me. Dr. King has also been an incredible resource about the literary community, and she’s kindly offered to continue to be a resource in the future.
If you want to explore editing or build a literary community, this is the internship you want. This summer was a great opportunity for me to develop my editing skills, and I know Dr. King is eager to meet the next year’s group of enthusiastic and dedicated editors. Go apply and become one of them!
