A Not-So-Random House Internship

Sigma Tau Delta is now accepting applications for priority consideration for Spring Penguin Random House internships. The Sigma Tau Delta priority application is due by November 7 for internships taking place Februrary 13 – April 21, 2023. A second PRH internship application period will open in January for the summer internship.

I’ve always been obsessed with storytelling for as long as I can remember, so when I applied for college, I knew right away that I wanted to major in English. Encouraged by my Chapter Advisor and mentor, I applied for the Penguin Random House internship on a whim. Never in my wildest dreams would I predict that I would receive an email a few weeks later asking if I was available for an interview. Several rounds later, I received a phone call as I walked on the beach asking if I would accept the opportunity to join the PRH Children’s Books team as a marketing intern. Thus began the best summer of my college career.

Despite being a remote internship, my time with Penguin Random House was nothing short of welcoming and supportive. Paired with an amazing mentor and team, I navigated my way through picture books, middle-grade series, branded content, and young adult titles across four teams. PRH Children’s Books is broken up into four sub-teams for their marketing department: trade marketing, brand marketing, digital marketing, and school & library marketing. While interning for Penguin, I was able to spend two weeks in each department and learn what makes each of them unique in the world of children’s book marketing.

As a recent college graduate, this internship provided me with a first look at what my career could be. From drafting copy for ad campaigns to working with influencers, and even working with major branded titles from Disney and Marvel, my time with Penguin was anything but boring. Each day I was faced with a different challenge and explored a new area of the world of children’s marketing. A highlight of my internship had to be working with the show team to help organize booths and signings at San Diego Comic-Con. I always wanted to attend the show and while I still have yet to do so, I had the amazing opportunity to see the back workings of what it takes to bring the Penguin Random House titles to life at such a large event.

It was a joy to work with all of the teams and I am forever grateful to Sigma Tau Delta for providing the opportunity to work with my dream company. Without their funding and support throughout my undergraduate years, I would never have dreamed that I would be able to work at the heart of the publishing world. I would also like to thank Penguin Random House and the amazing teams I worked with for all of their compassion and support!
