The Summer I Became an Editorial Intern for the Sigma Tau Delta Journals

As an international graduate student, I was always looking for a community and things that foster a sense of belonging. Clubs and organizations can certainly help one find like minded people, but I was also interested in finding a community that could also help me with professional development. Because I had joined Sigma Tau Delta when I began my graduate studies, I found out about the publication internship and knew at once that I had to apply. Upon being accepted, I knew this was what my summer was meant for.

Working with Managing Editor of Publications Dr. Carie King and my co-interns, Kailey Blount and Emily Blevins, made the internship experience all the more fruitful. Our focus was on ensuring the highest quality of submissions for both the Rectangle and the Review. It was incredibly rewarding to see the different essays, poems, stories, and scholarly articles that were submitted and to work through the process of reading each submission to determine which ones aligned best with the journals’ overall needs. It was sometimes difficult to choose which pieces to publish and which ones to reject, but I began to understand that publication is a process of filtering and critical decision making. I also was able to appreciate the diversity of academic topics and voices in this field of study. There is just so much more to talk about in our discipline!

The Sigma Tau Delta Journal Internship was nothing less than the highlight of my summer. It made me keenly aware of the process of having work published in academic and creative journals and why it is beneficial for students and professionals in English literature, creative writing, education, and rhetoric. I appreciated the community that it built for me and the motivation it gave me to move forward in academia. There’s a whole community of like-minded and passionate people who share and listen to ideas through writing and publishing. I’m glad I was able to help from behind the scenes.

The 2025 Centennial Sigma Tau Delta Journals will be available for you to enjoy in January. In the meantime, check out Angela’s hard work by claiming your copy of the 2024 Sigma Tau Delta Journals!
