Meet Kelly Taylor

Kelly Taylor is the Junior Student Advisor of Sigma Tau Delta. She is completing an MA in War, Diplomacy, and Society at Chapman University where she graduated with a BA in History and a BFA in Creative Writing in May 2024. Her current research centers around memoirs authored by servicewomen. She had the incredible honor of working as an Editorial Intern for Random House Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Penguin Random House, this past summer 2024. She loves talking for hours, reading for days, and can’t wait to meet you all over this year!

  1. I chose to study War, Diplomacy, and Society because I am interested in studying war literature. My interest started when I read The Hunger Games at age twelve, and it has only grown as I’ve begun to trace themes from memoirs and histories to science fiction.
  2. I love how interdisciplinary War, Diplomacy, and Society is. It incorporates so many subjects, including History, English, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Art History and so much more.
  3. The last book I read was If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio.
  4. My favorite book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
  5. A book character I identify with is Sydney Sage from Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy and Bloodlines.
  6. The last book I bought was The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, but I haven’t read it yet.
  7. My favorite book to screen adaptation is HBO’s True Blood based on the series by Charlaine Harris. It is an excellent adaptation! It takes the themes lurking in the Sookie Stackhouse books and really brings them to the surface.
  8. I’m equally a reader and a writer.
  9. My favorite style of writing is science fiction.
  10. My go-to children’s book is The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is the summer my grandma insisted on reading the first Harry Potter aloud to us. I was very begrudging at first, but I decided that maybe books weren’t as boring as they seemed. I fell in love with reading after that.
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be a princess . . . or a mermaid . . . or an artist.
  13. My first job was as a freelance copyediting for a small science fiction/fantasy publishing house.
  14. My dream job is anything that lets me do a lot of reading or researching! I’m still working to figure out exactly what I’d like to do.
  15. I like to spend my free time playing tennis or basketball—not very well. Or running—not very quickly—on the trail behind my house.
  16. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Paris.
  17. The literary place I’d most like to visit is St. Vladimir’s Academy from the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
  18. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in a tree house with a huge library and a lot of grass below me.
  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are water, a sewing kit, and a rope.
  20. The one song I could listen to on repeat is Ultra Violet (Light My Way)” by U2.
  21. The best gift I ever received was a hand-drawn poster with the lyrics of “Nothing You Can Take from Me” from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is a kid’s book called Kelly and the Cow Pies that I wrote and illustrated (with much help) at the behest of my four-year-old cousin for his birthday.
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up lemon bars.
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, Pamela Dawes’ avgolemono soup from Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Richelle Mead.
