Fanfiction is often a young author’s first introduction to writing, especially writing to an audience. Many of these writers have their work reviewed or commented on and changed by their peers. These pieces, though written with a specific fan base in mind and with characters or stories from other works, still have value as pieces of literature and often websites where these pieces are written are the first training ground for budding authors.
Short stories and fanfiction alike are both often a young author’s first foray into the world of writing and often seen as lower forms of authorship. However, many classic authors began writing with short stories, or have short stories in their portfolios of writing, from Mary Shelley to Neil Gaiman. Short stories are valuable forms of art, and fanfiction, while borrowing from story lines and characters that already exist, are short stories.
I believe our goal should not be to shame young authors out of writing fanfiction but rather to encourage them to write short stories that feature their own characters and locations. The ultimate goal should be to encourage writers to branch out and write their own fiction. Learning to write is difficult and writing fiction can often be more difficult to learn as it has fewer rules and outlines than academic writing. We should encourage anyone learning to write and help them to elevate their writing and learn to write more effectively.
Sigma Tau Delta offers multiple opportunities promoting the writing of short stories, including publishing in the Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle and the opportunity to present short stories at regional conferences and the annual convention. I personally have presented short stories at regional conferences and the convention, and have been encouraged to write longer pieces as a result. Letting students know that the opportunity is there is a great way to encourage them to branch out in their writing. After all, the goal is to learn how to refine the craft of writing and to become better at telling stories to the world.
