Meet Matthew Chinique

Matthew Chinique (he/him) is the Student Representative for the Eastern Region. He is a senior at The College of New Jersey, majoring in English Secondary Education and minoring in Sexuality and Queer Studies. At TCNJ, Matthew serves as president for his chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, while also working for the School of Education and the Tutoring Center. He plans to pursue an MA in English from TCNJ as well. Matthew is from Forked River, NJ, and also has a dog named Legs!

  1. I chose to become an English Major because I always dreamt of being an English teacher (although I originally applied to college as a biology major)!
  2. My favorite part of being an English Major is that I get to learn all about the different literary niches that engage, interest, and/or excite my peers!
  3. The last book I read was Washington Square by Henry James.
  4. My favorite book is A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.

  6. The last book I bought was Bingo by Rita Mae Brown, and I have read it.
  7. My favorite book to movie adaptation is The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.
  8. I’m equally a reader and a writer.
  9. My favorite style of writing is literary analysis (blog posts, essays, etc.).
  10. My go-to children’s book is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is playing Super Smash Brothers with my sister (and always losing to her . . .).
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be a dental hygenist.
  13. My first job was as a pizza delivery driver.
  14. My dream job is English teacher/professor and/or track coach.
  15. I like to spend my free time running, playing video games, or blogging about music.
  16. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Havana, Cuba.
  17. The literary place I’d most like to visit is Grand Isle, LA, from The Awakening by Kate Chopin!

  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are a joke book, an iPod, and juggling balls.

  21. The best gift I ever received was a scrapbook from my partner to celebrate our one year anniversary.
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is customized birthday cards with really bad puns on them.
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up scrambled eggs or pasta!
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, it would be ambrosia from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Alison Bechdel.
