Meet the Deltans

Meet Isaiah Russell

Isaiah Russell is a senior at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, and the Student Representative for the High Plains Region of Sigma Tau Delta. He is currently pursuing a BA in English with a concentration in writing. He also serves as the president of his university’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter and works at his university’s writing center. A few of his favorite things include short-distance travel, local history, and community meals.

  1. I chose to become an English Major because in my opinion, writing and literature are the broadest and most accessible mediums through which to explore the human condition.
  2. My favorite part of being an English Major is being able to experience and discuss the myriad of emotional, historical, and cultural perspectives that different kinds of writing provide.
  3. The last book I read was The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.
  4. My favorite book is Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
  5. A book character I identify with is Anna from When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson.
  6. The last book I bought was Studio Ghibli: An Industrial History by Rayna Denison, and I have read it.
  7. My favorite book to movie adaptation is Drive My Car, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, an adaptation of a Haruki Murakami short story.
  8. I’m more of a reader.
  9. My favorite style of writing is short form fiction.
  10. My go-to children’s book is Heidi, by Johanna Spyri.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is walking along the creek near my house in the winter, then running home when it got dark.
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be a detective (I had played all of the Nancy Drew PC games.).
  13. My first job was working at my local grocery store.
  14. My dream job is probably teaching English or copy editing.
  15. I like to spend my free time walking in nature, listening to CDs, and motivating myself to read/write.
  16. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Hokkaido, Japan.
  17. The literary place I’d most like to visit is Prince Edward Island.
The Green Gables house on Prince Edward Island.
  18. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in a non-car dependent area with robust public transportation.
  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are a pen, a paper, and a bottle.
  20. The one song I could listen to on repeat is Hole in the Ocean Floor” by Andrew Bird.
  21. The best gift I ever received was tickets to an Iron & Wine concert.
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is my Blu-ray copy of the series Haibane Renmei (which is now very much out of print).
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up coffee or tea.
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, it would be the castella cake from The Tatami Galaxy by Tomihiko Morimi.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; I’d like to go with him on one of his airmail routes.
