Meet DeAndra Miller

DeAndra Miller is a is Sigma Tau Delta member—President of the Phi Chapter and the Senior Student Advisor on Student Leadership. She attends Minot State University, is married and a mother of three boys, and has an affinity for big dogs. She currently owns an English Mastiff named Kingsley (after Kingsley Shacklebolt in Harry Potter) and wants a St. Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Dane—her husband says that would equal a lot of dog food. DeAndra is also passionate about disability culture, representation, and literature—her son Deon is on the autism spectrum. Light it up blue!

1. My favorite movie currently is Black Panther. My favorite movie changes often.

2. I never leave the house without a poetry book, currently it is The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One, by Amanda Lovelace.
3. If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be French fries!
4. Growing up, I was sure I would be a doctor.
5. I know every word to the song “To Love You More” by Celine Dion.
6. The best gift I’ve ever received was my new PS4.
7. My nickname in high school was Dee.
8. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up Brown Stew Chicken.
9. I’m both a reader and writer.
10. The best paper title I ever created was “Antonio, Antonio: The Battle between Homoeroticism and Heteronormative Expectation in The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night.”
11. Do fictional places count? Because the literary place I’d most like to visit is Middle Earth!
12. My dream job is Professor and Author.
13. An author I truly admire is Ta’Nehisi Coates.
14. My go-to children’s book is Where the Wild Things Are; my three boys love the art..
15. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Santorini, Greece. It’s gorgeous in pictures.
16. My favorite part of being an English Major is being able to expand on previous understandings of a text and find new and interesting ways to look at texts.
17. The last book I read was Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng!
18. My favorite book is: I always say Harry Potter but though it is the original, it is no longer truly my favorite. I love I’ll Give You the Sun, by Jandy Nelson and Between the World and Me, by Ta’Nehisi Coates.
19. A bookstore that I haven’t been to but really want to visit is Cook & Book in Brussels, Belgium. There are books on the ceiling!
20. In 10 years, I’m betting that the big trend in literature will be with the rise of superheroes again, I am betting a big push into more sci-fi.
21. My first job was as a game advisor at GameStop.
22. The last book I bought was She Felt Like Feeling Nothing, by r.h. sin, but I have not yet read it.
23. The celebrity I’d most like to spend a day with is Melissa Harris-Perry.
24. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in Rovaniemi, Finland.
25. My Hogwarts House is Ravenclaw!
